PhD candidate Shveta Soam from Centre for Advanced Bioenergy Research in Faridabad, India, did a short-term fellowship at the Division of Environmental and Energy Systems Studies in the Department of Technology and Society in September till November 2015.

Who are you?
Shveta Soam, PhD Research scholar, IOC-DBT Centre for Advanced Bioenergy Research, Indian Oil Corporation Limited, Research & Development Centre, Faridabad, India.
What did you do at Lund University?
I worked on Life Cycle Assessment of 2G Ethanol with Prof. Pal Borjesson at Energy and Environmental System Studies (EESS), LTH.
What did your time at Lund University bring to your research?
I had a great learning experience at Lund University and being associated with SASNET, EESS and Chemical Engineering Department of LU gave me a lot of new research experiences, broaden my subject knowledge and above all a great working experience. Working at LU has brought a lot of research credentials in form of joint publications. I am sincerely thankful to all the colleagues at Lund University who have helped me during my research and stay in Sweden.
What is currently on your research agenda?
I am currently working on the sustainability assessment of biofuel production in India using LCA. I have finished sustainability assessment of first and second generation ethanol and currently working on the economics of 2G ethanol in India.
What was your latest research publication about?
My latest research publication entitled Life Cycle Assessment of Rice Straw Utilization practices in India published in Bioresource Technology and co-authored by Prof. Pal Borjesson of LU. The paper compares the LCA of four rice straw utilization practices such as fertilizer, animal fodder, electricity and biogas production and identified that producing electricity from rice straw is the most environment friendly practice in India.
During 2017 Dr. Shveta Soam worked with Professor Pål Börjesson at the Department of Environmental and Energy System Studies, where she analyzed the utilization of lignocellulosic waste for biofuels production in India and Sweden. Her research focused on the environmental assessment of biochemical conversion pathways of converting lignocellulose waste into renewable fuels like ethanol and biogas. The aim behind her and Professor Börjesson’s current research project is to analyze the environmental benefits of biofuels and their ability to reduce global warming. This project, which started in 2014 (partly funded by SASNET), has already resulted in two peer reviewed articles: “Global Warming Potential and Energy Analysis of Second Generation Ethanol Production from Rice Straw in India” (2016), and “Life Cycle Assessment of Rice Straw Utilization Practices in India” (2017).
SASNET South Asian short-term fellowship
In early 2015, SASNET announced the results of applications for short-term (1-2 months) PhD or post-doc fellowship stays at Lund University, financed by SASNET, during the academic year 2015–2016. The positions were open to PhD candidates in their final year, recent PhDs, and post-docs who have been students at universities in South Asia (i.e. Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka).
