The project focuses on the historical ruptures within the Indian nation since the Partition of 1947, 1971 and the present, which includes the long Kashmir conflict as a painful legacy of colonial border demarcations and the construction of the two nation-states. It raises questions about belonging and the idea of citizenship in its creation of the "other" within the national imaginary.

The project is led by Dr. Isha Dubey, who was a post-doctoral fellow at SASNET from 2019 to 2021, and Dr. Amrita Ghosh, who has collaborated with SASNET on several occasions, including as a visiting researcher in 2020/2021. Both scholars have extensive experience in memory studies, postcolonial and decolonial studies, gender and agency, colonialism and representation, and border studies.
