Threats and harassment over the internet are increasing worldwide. Social media accounts are being hijacked, private pictures distributed without permission, and users spammed and threated. According to a 2014 study by the Pew Research Center, this problem affects women more often than men.
Our aim is to invite researchers, journalists, and online activists to an exploratory workshop to discuss examples of harassment from different media landscapes. In addition to comparing the situation in Sweden and India, we will address the need for a global perspective on threats, harassment, and misinformation spreading on digital platforms, and the issue of digital ethics. This is a collaborative project between SASNET, the Department of Strategic Communication, and the School of Journalism at Lund University.
Watch a panel talk about online harassment from the Sweden–South Asia Media Project workshop, October 2015:
Participants: Karin Arbsjö (School of Journalism), Emma Holten (Swedish-Danish journalist) and Divya Rajagopal (founder WhyHate project)
