NIAS SUPRA Nordic Scholarship

NIAS

Apply for the SUPRA Nordic scholarship before 1 June 2017. The SUPRA Nordic scholarship is one of the most important features of NIAS' Support Programme for Asian Studies. It is designed to make NIAS’ digital library and other resources accessible to PhD candidates and MA students in the Nordic countries.

The scholarship covers inexpensive travel to and from Copenhagen and accommodation in a NIAS room at Nordisk Kollegium, with full board for a period of two weeks. Stays are subject to a time schedule administered by NIAS.

Resources at NIAS

The librarians at NIAS will give the SUPRA students a comprehensive introduction to the use of the NIAS LINC resources. The students will have at their disposal a suitably equipped work place, and access to all the facilities at NIAS. They will be encouraged to interact with NIAS researchers and will have the opportunity to make a short lunchtime presentation for NIAS staff and receive expert advice. Other benefits include specific thesis advice, invitations to participate in seminars and workshops, and a discount on NIAS Press publications.

The application deadlines for the scholarship are 1 June and 1 October.

Students from institutions belonging to the Nordic NIAS Council (NNC) will have priority access to fully-financed NIAS SUPRA scholarships. Students from institutions outside the NNC are also eligible, but will have to cover their travel expenses to and from Copenhagen.

More information.

NIAS - the Nordic Institute of Asian Studies - is an academically independent Nordic research and resource center, focusing on modern Asia from a predominantly social sciences perspective. NIAS is an integrated part of the University of Copenhagen with the status of a centre under the Department of Political Science.

The study of Asia in the Nordic region is fragmented across many, relatively small, research environments. Therefore collaboration at a regional level is needed to ensure that support, networks and opportunities exist for scholars and students active in Asian studies in the Nordic region. Through the Nordic NIAS Council (NNC), in which leading Nordic universities and research institutions participate, NIAS organizes a well-functioning institutionalized cooperation that strengthens collaboration in the Nordic countries.

NIAS SUPRA, the Support Programme for Asian Studies, is one of the most important of NIAS' services. The SUPRA programme comprises multiple forms of research support specially aimed at students and researchers, including a number of online services available both at NIAS, and outside the institute.

The programme is open to students residing and studying in the Nordic countries, who have been admitted to a university MA or PhD programme and who actively carry out studies relating to Asian studies. SUPRA also gives researchers the opportunity to come to NIAS to carry out their research for a short or long period. Other Nordic networks focusing on Asia can apply for support for workshops, seminars and conferences via the SUPRA programme.
