Conflicts along the Narmada river

NBA
Lecture
SASNET and LUCSUS invite you to a joint seminar on struggles along the Narmada river in the context of water conflicts in India with water expert and former activist Shripad Dharmadhikary.

The speaker for this session is Shripad Dharmadhikary. He was a full-time activist for 12 years with the Narmada Bachao Andolan (Save the Narmada Movement), founded by Right Livelihood Award winner Medha Patkar. He is also the founder and current coordinator of Manthan Adhyayan Kendra, a research institute which specialises in water and energy issues.

Shripad will share his experiences from the Narmada struggle, including an overview of the project, key issues raised by the struggle, important strategies used by the struggle and will discuss key strengths and limitations of the movement, as well as what it has managed to achieve. These will be illustrated with narratives from the struggle. He will place the Narmada struggle in context of the larger picture of water conflicts and struggles for justice and equity in India, and highlight the contribution that the struggle has made to the development discourse in the country.
