In his lecture, Erik Törner, who has worked in international development for more than 25 years, presented an overview of India’s economic rise alongside the social challenges that persist. He described the country’s increasing GDP, expanding technology sector, and growing global influence, while also noting that not all groups are able to share in these developments.
The lecture highlighted how gender and caste continue to shape access to education, employment, and mobility. He also described how Svalorna Indien Bangladesh collaborates with local organisations in India, supporting initiatives such as women’s groups and legal aid, which can make a tangible difference in people’s daily lives.
Climate change was also addressed as a factor that disproportionately affects vulnerable communities, and global events were discussed in relation to their local impact. To illustrate these themes, Erik Törner shared field observations and photographs from his travels in India.
The event was free of charge and open to the public.
