Gopal Karanth lectured at successful first GO:India - SASNET Brown Bag seminar in Gothenburg

On Tuesday 17 April 2012, the first University of Gothenburg Brown Bag seminar with focus on contemporary India was held. The seminar was successfully organised by the University project Go:India and SASNET, following the same model that SASNET has introduced at Lund University. It was held in the beautiful Glass House at the inner court yard between the School of Photography and the Valand School of Fine Arts in Gothenburg.

Speaker at the premiere seminar was Professor Gopal Karanth from the Centre for Study of Social Change and Development at the Institute for Social and Economic Change (ISEC) in Bangalore, India, but during the academic year 2011/12 ICCR India Chair Professor at Lund University. Prof. Karanth talked about ”Looking back and looking forward. Class, Caste and Economic Change in Contemporary Rural India” to an engaged and mixed audience of researchers and students from various fields.

The next Go:India – SASNET Brown Bag seminar in Gothenburg will take place on 29 May 2012 and will feature Professor Annika Härenstam from the Department of Work Science. More information to follow.

Prior to the seminar a separate meeting to discuss potential areas of collaboration was organised between Åke Sander and Katarina Plank from the university’s Department of Literature and History of Ideas; the co-ordinator of the Go:India project, Sigridur Beck; Julia Velkova from SASNET; and Prof. Gopal Karanth (on photo to the left, except Julia). The meeting was fruitful and a number of projects were identified.
