SASNET News:

• Vice-Chancellor Boel Flodgren has now officially established SASNET as a Special Activity at Lund University from 1 July 2001. The network root node at Lund will be attached to the International Office. Within short, the positions as director/co-ordinator and webmaster/secretary will be announced. Deadline for applications: 10 August 2001.

• Boel Flodgren has also decided the composition of SASNET’s first board for the period 1 July 2001 to 31 December 2003

Community News:

• Berkshire Publishing Group, England, seeks scholars with some editorial experience to participate in the six-volume Encyclopedia of Asia 2002 as Associate Developmental Editors.

• The situation for Indology studies in Göteborg is critical since the Dept. for Comparative Philology and Sanskrit was closed down at the end of year 2000. 

• The Palme–Linnaeus International Exchange Programme offers grants to University Teachers and Students for the year 2001-2002. Last date for applications: August 1. 

Conferences, courses and important lectures

• The Seventh Himalayan Languages Symposium is arranged by Dept. of Linguistics and Dept. of African and Asian Languages at Uppsala University on September, 7-9, 2001.

• A conference on the relation between Education and the Reduction of Poverty will be arranged by Sida and the Seminar for Development Studies in Uppsala on October, 18, 2001. The organizers invite researchers to contribute with articles/papers to be presented.

Research papers/dissertations

• Åsa Tiljander Dahlström, Department of Cultural Anthropology and Ethnology at Uppsala University defended her doctoral thesis ”No Peace of Mind – The Tibetan Diaspora in India”, on June 6, 2001. 

• Hans Hadders at the Dept. of Social Anthropology at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, Trondheim, has written on ”The Gift of the Eye. Mortuary ritual performed by the Jadopatias in the Santal Villages of Bengal and Bihar, India”.

• The Swedish National Museums of World Culture has, with support from Sida, initiated a web publication in Swedish called Omvärldsbilder – of great value for researchers and students with an interest to follow how issues on Human rights, Conflicts, Resources and Environment are covered by United Nations and other international organizations. The editing is done by Leif Ohlsson at the Dept. of Peace and Development Studies, Göteborg University, who also administers a mailing-list with weekly summaries.
