The Division of Physiological Chemistry I is one of the 12 research divisions within MBB.
The Department of Medical Biochemistry and Biophysics was founded 1992 as a merger between the former departments of Physiological Chemistry, Biochemistry and Medical Biophysics. The department has a long heritage of internationally renowned research.

Research connected to South Asia

Birgitta Agerberth, since 2007 Professor in Medical Microbial Pathogenesis, heads a research group within the Division of Physiological Chemistry I. A central issue in Birgitta Agerberth's research is how the inherited immune defence manages to keep us healthy despite all the bacteria around us. More precisely, it revolves around the human antimicrobial peptide LL-37 and how it works and is regulated, with the current focus on shigella. More information on her research.

In November 2009, Prof. Agerberth was awarded SEK 900 000 as a three-years research grant (2010–12) from the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency, Sida, for a a new project entitled ”Clinical trial of oral phenyl butyrate and vitamin D adjunctive therapy in pulmonary tuberculosis in Bangladesh: a pilot study”.
