Collaboration with South Asia
For several years, the Medical Programme at Uppsala University was involved in an exchange project with the Christian Medical College in Vellore, India, through the Linnaeus Palme International Exchange programme. The project involved an exchange of students and teachers for a period of 12-14 weeks. Initially the Swedish coordinator was Associate Professor Carin Muhr at the Dept. of Neuroscience, Uppsala University, but the programme was later coordinated by Dr. Tomas Borg at the Section for Orthopaedics, Dept. of Surgical Sciences (and chairman of the International Committee at the Disciplinary Domain of Medicine and Pharmacy, Uppsala University).
For the period 1 July 2009 – 30 June 2010, two students and two teachers were sent both ways. Mostly the Swedish students went for a course in Surgery at Vellore, whereas the Indian students did practical clinical training in Medicine and Surgery at Uppsala University. See SASNET’s list of all South Asia related Linnaeus Palme exchange Programme grants 2009-10.
From 2012, the Medical Programme at Uppsala University, develops a new Linnaeus Palme programme collaboration focusing on student exchange with Sri Jayewardenapura University in Sri Lanka. In February 2012, the International Programme Office for Education and Training (Internationella Programkontoret) decided to give SEK 80 000 for this project for the period 2012-13. The Swedish coordinator is Senior Lecturer Ulla Lindqvist at the Department of Medical Sciences.
